Inspired by my Grandmother Virgie Mae, this story came from my imagination about a young couple in the 40s, wartime. Many of the references are about my step father who was a soldier and was called Red because of his red curly hair.

Read Your Letters
Read your letters again today
The ones I tucked away in vain
The last time I saw you walk away
The first speaks of wishes and hints
A boyish desire for a first kiss
Inviting me to the summer dance in May
The one in the green envelope
Tells me I'm the one you hope
To have and hold till we grow old
Pray our child wears my smile
Promises of a wedding day
The letter with heather pressed inside
Spring winds still remind
Sweet days spent side by side
Youth made us forget the tide
Hand in hand full of pride
Thinking no end to this ride
Read your letters again today
Pulled the ribbon I tied to stay
The last time I saw you walk away
Read your letters again today
Just to hear all you had to say
Before I saw you walk away
The pages scented in your cologne
How I love to hold them close
Tears smear the ink upon the page
Miss you love
With your fountain pen
Wishing you could write me again
Maybe my heart would mend
Miss you love
With your tussled red
Wishing you could write me again
Maybe I’ll mend
Read your letters over and over amen
Starting with the first until they end
Then I began again
